Coffee in Nicaragua
Coffee is a critical commodity for the Nicaraguan economy. Large scale coffee production began in the 1850’s.
The countries North accounts for the majority of production which consists of volcanic and mountainous topography. This land provides fantastic conditions to cultivate coffee and grow quality beans. Political and economic stability in the 1990’s brought about more focus on coffee production and the government has introduced many public programs to support coffee crops.
Some Nicaraguan coffees carry the designation ‘European Preparation’, this is grading on the bean size that ensures 100% of the coffee is above Screen 15; with an allowance of 8 defects per 300g maximum. Coffees grown between 1500 and 2000 MASL have the designation Strictly High Grown. [SHG]

Plunger Coffee
Plunger coffee also known as a French press is a simple, manual brewing method that gives you total control over your brew and it’s one of the least expensive brewing methods available.
It extracts a very strong and robust cup of coffee, without the need for any sort of electrical brewing system. You get complete control over your brew,.
But the French press is not without its drawbacks. Because it’s a manual brewing system, you can’t exactly set it and just walk away otherwise you’ll over extract and end up with a bitter coffee.
Use a burr grinder to grind whole coffee beans into coarse, consistently-sized grounds.
Instructions:
- The first step to warm up the press, rinse with some boiling water this will help maintain the temperature while brewing. Discard hot water.
- Add desired amount of ground coffee for the coffee : water ratios for number of cups you are making roughly one table spoon for the pot and one for each number of cups you are making.
- Bring your desired amount of water to a boil, and then allow it to cool for one minute. Pour the water into the French press.
- Stir vigorously to break up the top layer.
- Allow the coffee too steep for an additional four minutes, gently push the plunger all the way to the bottom of the press. Serve.
- Any extra Coffee can be used, however it will go bitter as it sits, so don’t leave too long.
